Research in Schools

Research in Schools has developed from project work formerly known as Teachers as Researchers. The Research in Schools programs are designed to support schools to develop a sustainable approach to professional learning and school improvement through the powerful mechanism of Action Research. Action Research in education is a dynamic, meaningful, investigative process by school leaders and teachers to improve what they do, including how they work with and for others. The systematic, data driven and cyclic nature of action research is said to empower leaders and teachers to craft the most appropriate processes, approaches and strategies in and for their school environment.

The Research in Schools programs are designed to build the capacity of schools to implement action
research projects to investigate issues, concepts and ideas about practice and school improvement within their own context. This is supported through a comprehensive program of professional learning including online, virtual, face-to-face and mentorship.

In 2016, four research programs are offered to independent schools to meet both their experiential levels and investigative focus:

Teachers as Researchers: Introductory Program
Designed to provide teachers in schools, new to the action research process, with the knowledge, understanding and support to effectively implement an action research project aligned to issues identified as significant for investigation within the school.  This program enables teachers to lead these investigations into areas of interest, concern or need that can impact teacher practice, understanding and student learning.

Teachers as Researchers: Continuing Program
Designed to provide teachers in schools, with previous action research experience, with the opportunity to use this process again to effectively implement an action research project aligned to issues identified as significant for investigation within the school.  This program enables teachers to lead more complex investigations into areas of interest, concern or need that can further impact teacher practice, understanding and student learning.

School Focused Research: Introductory Program
Designed to provide leaders in schools, new to the action research process, with the knowledge, understanding and support to effectively implement an action research project aligned to issues identified as significant for investigation within the school.  This program enables leaders to work in a team to investigate areas of interest, concern or need that can impact the school as a whole.

School Focused Research: Continuing Program
Designed to provide leaders in schools, with previous action research experience, with the opportunity to use this process again to effectively implement an action research project aligned to investigate issues identified as significant at a whole school level.  This program enables leader led teams to engage in more complex investigations into areas of interest, concern or need that can further impact school improvement.
