Students Embrace STEM at Trinity
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning at Trinity Anglican School is a priority at every level of the school, from the Board through to the school’s dedicated teaching professionals.
While STEM is infused through all year levels of the school curriculum, the Prep to Year 12 co-educational school in Cairns gives students the chance to study a specially developed, dedicated STEM elective in Years 9 and 10.
Students can choose to take the STEM Extension Studies course for one semester or one year. The course, which has proved highly popular with students, includes two distinct units on drone technology and aquaponics. During the drone unit students not only learn how drones operate and how to fly them, but also how to design and build them from scratch in the school’s award-winning STEM building.
In the aquaponics unit, which is a hybrid of aquaculture and hydroponics, students learn the components of an aquaponics system as well as how these elements work together to increase productivity and resilience. Students are then tasked with building their own mini aquaponic system and challenged to examine and investigate the factors that impact its success.
The course provides a strong grounding for students interested in studying specific maths and science-based subjects in their senior years. According to the school more students study STEM subjects in Years 11 and 12 than any other subjects, with the school set to expand its offerings to include Marine Science in 2019.
